INTRODUCTION:
5 TECHNOLOGIES OF
ANCESTOR DREAMING

READ THE TRANSCRIPT

Greetings Good Listeners. In this preface, we’ll look at how we discern the difference between five different types of ancestor dreaming technologies and how they function –

And yes, you guessed it, I said the number five, so we are mapping these five technologies on an altar.

I’m going to talk about Sleep Dreams, Day Dreams, Waking Dreams, Oracle Vision and Prophetic Sight.

What is the purpose of understanding these distinctions in the first place, why does it matter?

Well, I’d like to put that question on the table to unfold. Lets go on this journey and continue returning to that question throughout the curriculum.

The reason I’m talking about it is because one day I decided to do that research, because it excited me. I was like, oh wait, what is the difference between a waking dream and a day dream? It lit up something in me. I do find a lot joy in nerding out about these things. So that’s why I’m doing it. Cuz that’s the point. It’s my ALIVE memoir.

Another reason – when you’re open to the spirit realms, it is very easy to get lost. Especially right now, when we are more open to spirit than ever.

When we understand the nuances and distinctions of what type of data spirit is feeding us in any given moment, we develop more facility with it. We can walk more easefully in our every day life. It doesn’t over power us.

We know what to put where – what is a piece of guidance that is just for myself, what is something I’m meant to share publicly, what is meant to go into a creative work in development.

Before I dive in, a few words on my approach to sharing my knowledge about these topics and my aim when I teach.

These are my definitions. I’m not taking a colonized academic approach to tell you these are the rules. This is how spirit works. This is what is happening for you.

This is just what I think today. And that might change tomorrow.

This is especially important to me when it comes to Spirit because everyone is their own Universe.

Different lineages and traditions have their own interpretations of ancestral technologies, and make meaning differently. Even within a tradition, each individual has their own sovereign relationship to the Spirit world and “how things work” – how grief moves, how ancestors move, what things mean and what they don’t mean.

I’m really not trying to create an environment here where people are like, no, that’s not true!

I’m sharing with you my process of how I look incredibly precisely at my own nuances, and what they mean for me – if it resonates with you, that’s great.

But at the end of the day, what I share with you about myself is meant to inspire you to look deeper at yourself, to study your own work, to nurture the development of your own research and traditions, to offer you a seed that helps you understand your dream world more.

We are sitting in different places of the circle, and we see things differently. That’s the point of Ancestor Dreaming together. I say something, and you say something in response, that may be completely unexpected, or out of left field, or even contradictory. At the end we have a mosaic that is exactly what the world needs.

Okay, let’s get into it.

First of all – the sleep dream world.

Fundamentally I will say that ancestor dreaming is about far more than just dream interpretation or dream analysis.

Here, we understand our night-time dreamscape as another realm of reality where our life is happening, and that is ours to care for, the same way we care for our bodies, our mental health, our families, our causes, our movements, and the earth itself.

I have a podcast episode I recorded a couple years ago called “decolonizing the dream world” where I spoke more about this.

There’s a whole ass white supremacist history – imagine that! – if you look at the so-called “fathers” of dream interpretation and modern day psychotherapy linked to the “enlightenment period” aka the pedagogical foundation for modern day capitalist colonial expansion, anti-Blackness, racism, patriarchy and the like. The way white mean stole and extracted knowledge from Indigenous cosmologies, and matriarchal societies, and then built this body of wisdom that unfolded into what we know of “dream analysis” and “dream “interpretation” and took it outside of its original context.

When you look at popular dream interpretation, it is very similar to the extractive way we are taught to think in academia. Knowledge and wisdom is something we’re supposed to take and devour and use, instead of develop a reciprocal relationship to a fully formed part of the land that is alive, and yours to care for.

We want to know – I dreamt of this thing last night, what does it mean, oh that’s cool. When maybe that was an Ancestor communicating with you, and it wasn’t about giving you a message as much as it was about nurturing a relationship. A relationship that yeah is full of riches and medicine and wisdom and messages, but it’s a relationship, first and foremost.

So, if you have a whole world that is your responsibility to care for – your dream world, the best thing you can do is try to understand it. If you understand it, you can properly care for it, and that’s the goal. And then it offers you back so much more.

If you look at the application portal for the featured artist program, I posted a downloadable PDF called, “an example of how I decode my dream world.” In that doc I take you through one, like, 5 minute dream I had one night, and my process of how I decode meaning and understand the many layers of meaning it held.

Throughout this curriculum, there will surely be other times that I bring in more wild dreams that I have for us to study – because let me tell you, I got some weird ass dreams going on all the time.

Now let’s talk about the dreams that we have while we are awake. What is the distinction between a day dream, a waking dream, an oracle vision, and prophetic sight.

Let’s say you’re sitting on your couch, or in front of your laptop and your mind goes off wandering and suddenly you’re in a dream, you’re in a vision, you’re in another “timeline” – although we’ll talk about the difference between timelines and dimensions in another voice note…

But here’s what I got for today:

An oracle vision is intentionally sitting down with a question, and looking at it with your third eye, your multidimensional listening and your ‘clair’ senses. I’m in my oracle visions when I have received a question that someone asked me, and I can see something that helps me respond.

This can be directly talking to someone I’m reading cards for, but it can also be a question that life is asking me, it can be something my body is asking me. You may or may not be conscious that I asked a question, or someone asked me a question, but either way, the oracle vision is seeing the response.

A waking dream, on the other hand, is your spirit world responding to you. You asked a question, and life returns to you more of the conversation.

I put the “oracle vision” in the north part of the altar, which I associate with the clear cut precision of the air element.

My oracle visions can often be exchanged in a back and forth dialogue. They can take some time to decode and unfold, but I associate them with more straightforward questions and answers.

Whereas “waking dreams” I put in the West, the realm of water. When I experience waking dreams, I receive them with my full body. They usually happen when I’m not expecting them. I am just living life, and then suddenly a portal opens, and a dream pours over me.

With oracle visions, they open up when I’m intentionally seeking. There’s a sharp eagle eye quality. But the waking dream is like a wave coming over my entire body.

Waking Dreams are for the times you’re asking a question about life, about yourself, about something you care about, and the answer comes to you in its own time. And this is the type of answer that can only come in the form of a story, that contains many more stories.

An oracle vision is a gift because you can see something from the unique place you sit, and your teachers are asking you to please learn this, please share this. That’s very much an “air” thing.

In the west we find what literally wakes us up. What wakes us in the middle of the night. What wakes us out of complacency. What makes us want to live instead of merely exist. It’s what returns to you when something gets dislodged in your body and starts moving again.

What’s the difference between an oracle vision and prophetic sight?

A prophecy. Okay. A prophecy is a form of prediction. This shall come to pass.

When the Lone Wolf Finally Returns to her Divinely Ordained Wolf Pack, this shall signify the end of many eras of destruction, calamity and catastrophe, and the Earth shall be restored as an ever-lasting Global Thriving Village.

Oracle Vision is looking at something that is already here and discerning its multidimensional nature.

Prophetic Sight is seeing it before it happened.

Here’s my take on prediction: prediction is possible when someone is living so specifically, so devoted to their sovereign life path, to the life story they came here to live, that in every single small detail, you’re really, really in it. You’re in the book you’re supposed to live. You’re in the only story you came here to tell and live out.

Prophetic Sight is for very good listeners, and very skilled writers.

You’re in chapter three, and the tornado just blew the house into Oz. But you know this story. You can feel it, the full architecture of it. You close your eyes and you listen to all of it. And you know you see that Lone Wolf find her Pack in chapter 10. And you know how the story ends, because you know that Wolf. You Know Her. You know what she means to you.

See, Prophetic Sight is about love.

Prophetic Sight isn’t just about knowing what’s going to happen. You believe it, because you have that much faith in your relationships. Your love for the Wolf transcends time and space.

You remember what the Wolf told you, maybe in a different story, a different lifetime, about when and why and where they would find their Wolf Pack, and what would inevitably unfold in the world because of that miracle.

You know wholeheartedly that what she said is true, because she said it. And even if there is no guarantee that what she said will come to pass, you know it will – because you know her.

When you’re a very skilled writer – the hardest thing, for me at least, in the writing process, is getting to a place in any given minute, where I can just sit in it. Oh here, here it is. Here’s my story. When you sit there, you can feel and see everything. You know all of these different things that happen in different moments, and everything else is kinda blurry, and you just let yourself go along for the ride.

There are many different stories we could be writing right now, as a collective species.

We could be in the story where AI takes over the world. We could be in the story where mass collective earth stewardship becomes the dominant reality. We could be in the story that kind of sort of wins the revolution, but with lots of compromises.

Prophetic Sight is about where you choose to sit. What story you choose to invest in.

And when you just sit here, and you are a very, very good listener. You get the whole picture. You know what’s true here, even if it hasn’t happened yet. Because you know the story you came here to live. There might be lots of choose your own adventures in the midst of that, but you know where it leads.

For many of us, myself included, the story you chose was locked in the minute you took your first breath.

This is why we put Prophetic Sight in the East, the realm of fire. Fire just knows. Fire holds the big vision. In one of my youtube videos, when I mapped out voice acting on an altar, I put the Director on the realm of East. The one that is tasked to hold that big vision…who has to hold that frequency, who has to hold that story, and its integrity no matter how many times and ways people try and knock it off your hands.

And you know that’s what they’ll try and do!

Day Dream. This one for me is about my birth right to imagination. As serious as I am as a reader, a communicator, a channel with spirit, as real as spirit is to me…

There are some things I just get to mother fucking make up. Because it’s fun. Because I have a right to play. To be playful.

This is actually very connected to my erotic healing as a survivor. Or even just someone who has grown up in a very sex negative culture, that shamed me for being a sexual person, and conditioned me to repress the hell out of my sexual energy. And then as an adult, trying to have sexual relationships with people was so often confusing and scary – like, I don’t know what I like, or what I want, when was I supposed to figure that out?

A Day Dream, for me, is claiming my right to a sovereign fantasy space that is just mine, that I do not have to share with anyone, unless I really want to. It’s not anything that’s talking to me. It doesn’t exist anywhere other than here. And it doesn’t have to mean anything, other than what it means to me.

And thus, a Day Dream, can be maybe the most powerful dream of all…because of everything that it means to me.

I said at the beginning, it’s important to make these distinctions between these different kinds of dreaming, because otherwise we might get lost.

And I’ll tell you honestly, I’ve had some big realizations semi recently, that wait a second, this whole conversation that I had with a loved one in the spirit realm…I think I actually just made that up. I think I wasn’t actually talking to anyone but myself.

I went through this whole thing, what’s real and what isn’t real…haven’t we all.

But if this is true – that a Day Dream doesn’t mean anything, other than what it means to you. But it might just be the most powerful kind of dream you’re holding, because of everything it means to you…

This is why I’m putting it in the South. Because our work load is already so hard. That we need play. We need to have the freedom to just make things up. To just stare at the clouds and create a story that’s never been told before.

And because of that, maybe it’s the most important thing that we can give back to the Earth. To the physicality, and the real tangibility of our lives.

That maybe, because of what it means to us. Because we made it with our own hands. Maybe it means more to the Earth than anything else we could have done.

I’m gonna pause here for today.

This of course, is just the preface. I want to keep this referring back to this introduction as we move through the curriculum. When I talk about examples of actual dreams that I have, we’ll look at what is the specific kind of dream, is it a waking dream, is it a prophetic sight, and how is it functioning.

Looking at these examples will help us understand these definitions, and why they matter.

Now, during this curriculum, I’m going to offer some ‘should you choose to accept’ assignments for good listeners.

These are just my suggestions on how you can make most of the curriculum, and allow it to feed your own ancestral dreaming, your creative projects, your medicine practise, your world-building.

First of all, open invitation to always take in the offering – whether it’s a voice note, or video, or written piece, as a tincture.

Take a moment with the quiet before you dive in, breathe it in. Then after you’re done. Just sit for a moment and feel what it’s bringing up in you. Go with it, even if it’s running in a completely different direction.

You may be inspired to take anything I said as a journal prompt or jumping off piece.

You might be inspired to make something. To create something inspired by this conversation.

I love it when I listen to podcasts and people in the community are like – Oh, I embroidered this thing with this quote that you said. Or, I created this graphic. Or I sewed something, or I wrote a poem.

All of that is so welcome here. Just remember to give credit where credit is due, and refer back to this website.

But here’s a couple questions I have.

While I was recording this, I was thinking about divination. Between oracle visions, waking dreams, day dreams, prophetic dreams – where does divination land? What about Planet Whispering? Would you consider these a form of ancestor dreaming or something else?

Do you have completely different definitions than me? Do you see nuances that I didn’t pull out?

Make the conversation richer.

And I’ll see you in the next one.

Ravyn’s Assignments:

Open invitation to respond to anything that an offering brought up for you.

Question: what kind of dreams do you usually have? Are your dreams reflected in these definitions? Are you inclined toward one type of dream more than another? What does it make you think about?
